Beauty of Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar District is a district in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. It is named after Cox’s Bazar, which is one of the world’s longest natural sea beaches (120 km) including mud flats. It is located 150 km south of Chittagong. Cox’s Bazar is also known by the name “panowa” the literal translation of which means “yellow flower”. Its other old name was “Palongkee”. The modern Cox’s Bazar derives its name from Captain Cox (died1798), an army officer serving in British India. It is also one of the fishing ports of Bangladesh. Cox’s Bazar often termed as the “Worlds longest beach”, it is yet to become a major tourist destination in Asia allegedly due to lack of publicity. Cox’s Bazar is bounded by Chittagong District on the north, Bay of Bengal in the south, Bandarban District on the east, and the Bay of Bengal on the west. The official area of the city of Cox’s Bazar is 6.85km. Interesting places around Cox’s Bazar include Himchhari, located 18 km south of Cox’s Bazar along the sea beach, is a nice place for picnic and film shooting. The broken hills and waterfalls here are unique spots. Inani Beach, There are many attractions for the tourists around Coxs Bazaar. It is only 32 km from the main beach. Inani beach is famous for the rock and coral boulders; you will find big coral boulders in this beach. Teknaf is a small township on the naf river at the end of the hilly region. It is 80 km south of Cox’s Bazar and is a beautiful place facing Myanmar across the Naf. One of the major attractions of Teknaf is the journey by boat or sampan. A picturesque hilltop resort has also been developed at Teknaf. St. Martin’s Island, named after a British Governor, the country’s only coral island, is situated in the Bay of Bengal about 100 km off from Cox’s Bazar and 8 km south of Teknaf. Local people call the island Narikel Zinjira (coconut rows). Maheshkhali, also an island off the coast of Cox’s Bazar, has an area of 268 sq km. A range of low hills, about 300 feet high. On the top of the hills is famous Hindu temple, the adinath temple, which becomes a place of pilgrimage during the month of Falgun (March). Sonadia is a crescent shaped island about 7-km north-west of Cox’s Bazar. The area of the island is about 9 sq km. Every winter thousands of fishermen camp here and make large hauls. The island is a centre of the dry fish industry.
